It is almost getting too warm to hike around here in South Florida, but a friend invited us for another hike in Big Cypress National Preserve last weekend. The hike was guided by a Miccosuckee elder and it was wonderful to hear him describe how his tribe is getting ready for their New Year, which is marked by the return of the rainy season. Most people in the group ended up stopping after about an hour and half, but we kept going to see one of the cypress groves. In total, we hiked eight miles! It was a beautiful day, and it was our first time seeing the cypress grove when it was mostly dry inside. They are really special places, just brimming with life and serenity. It was a great day!
