Christmas is one of our favorite times of year. We decorate the house top to bottom–wreaths on the windows, giant tree in the living room, stockings hanging on the fireplace (we can’t wait to add another one soon!), lights outside, and festive touches throughout the house. It’s so festive that we love inviting people over to spend time in front of the fire with holiday snacks. We both grew up with families that made Christmas magical and one of the things we’re looking forward to most about having our own children is recreating that magic for them. A cozy house full of lights and smelling of pine is how we plan to celebrate Christmas as a family.
Another favorite holiday tradition we plan to continue as a family is holiday baking. Dan makes gingerbread every year–it’s something he’s done with his sisters since they were very small. This year he tried out some new shapes with bikes, trees, birds, and fish (got to keep things interesting, right?). We have a pretty large collection of cookie cutters and can’t wait to have our little one pick out the shapes. Gingerbread llamas, anyone?
Most importantly, we really love spending time with our tight-knit group of friends, and even more so, are families. This year we had a big friends holiday party with gifts for the kids. It’s very exciting to think that one year soon, we will bring our own child who will be able to play with our friends’ many kids and open presents from their extended “aunts and uncles.”
We were also lucky enough to see both of our families this year. Family is incredibly important to both of us so we’ve made it a point to visit both families during the holidays, something we very much hope to continue in the future. Since we drove, we were able to bring Berkeley, who got to meet her canine cousins and got to meet our new nephew, Bodhi!
We both feel very lucky to have loving, supportive parents and siblings who cannot wait to grow their family larger. Dan’s mother offered to come to DC when we have a little one and has already started knitting a baby blanket for the baby’s room. We’re so thankful for our families and are so excited to grow our own family in DC.
