Over the last couple of weeks we have had the opportunity to have visits with David’s parents and Robyn’s mom, uncle, nephew and sister. Being pastors our holidays are sometimes what we call “moveable feasts.” We don’t always celebrate fully on the day of a holiday we may celebrate the next day or the next time everyone is ready. This means that we don’t usually see our extended families on holidays as our house is a bit crazy. What happens, though, is that the time we do see our extended family becomes very special.
David’s parents typically travel to our home to visit. We have a guest room all set up for them and Lucas loves to see them. During their visits we typically try to go somewhere special such as the small local zoo, the bounce house / family play center, or even a farm. Then we spend a lot of time together around the house as Lucas shows them what he’s learned since the last time they visited.
Normally we travel to visit Robyn’s mom and family. It is harder for them to travel and there is a lot of family still near to where she grew up so it gives us the opportunity to visit multiple family members at once. Sometimes we will stay in a hotel and Lucas just loves this! He calls it “the sleeping house” and he thinks it is the coolest thing. When we visit Robyn’s family we get to see the pond in her mom’s backyard with all the fish and frogs. We go to her sister’s house where there is a stable with lots of horses to look at, feed, and pet. And of course, we eat together. Meals have always been a special time for her family.
No matter what, we love being able to connect with our extended families and making sure that Lucas gets to know all these special people in his life. It’s lovely that we are able to live close enough to be able to make these visits regularly.
