Since this is our first blog post, I’ll take just a moment to introduce us. I’m Laura, I’m a housewife, reader, writer, baker. My husband is Matthew, he’s an engineer, woodworker, problem solver. We also have Gatsby, he is our spoiled Saint Bernard. The three of us live in Indiana and are very much looking forward to expanding our family through adoption. We hope you have time to check out the rest of our website, which is full of information and pictures about us.
I hope to be able to post frequently, but for this one post I’m going to focus on the month of May, which will get you all caught up quickly. This post is pretty long (sorry, we’re playing catch up), the others will probably be shorter, so please bear with us.
May was a fairly busy month. It began with a cleaning frenzy as we were due to host Matthew’s siblings, Adam and Amy who were planning to visit from Michigan. They came for a long weekend at the very beginning of May. It’s always nice when we have family visiting, especially as we are still learning about the area around us. This time when they visited we took them to a flooded West Baden Springs Hotel for dinner (so…that didn’t quite go as planned), we took them exploring through downtown Bloomington (we got ice cream and all was right with the world), and at Amy’s urging, we also took them to the zoo.
Amy and Adam had never seen the West Baden Springs Hotel, which is an amazing place to visit and an even more amazing place to eat. We had hoped to show them the beautiful gardens, but those were under several feet of water during our visit. We did manage to go inside and have dinner at the restaurant under the enormous dome. I will admit to having a little bit of an obsession with the architecture at the hotel, it’s stunning.
Gardens underwater and an Amy photobomb.

Our zoo trip was so much fun! Matthew and I both love the zoo, and we often get our group of friends together to go with us. We made several new friends on this trip, and Adam and Amy both had a great time!
Adam isn’t a fan of having his photo taken, but he eventually got into the spirit.
Giraffes are a favorite spot.
Amy and I and a Giraffe or two.
Dolphin show is always a good time!
Matthew made a friend.
This bird was very curious about my bag.
The bird was also curious about Matthew.
The month of May also brings my birthday. As I am an avid baker, and a lover of the show The Great British Bake Off, I thought I would try one of their recipes. I chose a Schichttorte, which is a 20 layer German cake. Each layer is cooked under the broiler for a few minutes before you put the next layer on. It’s a very involved cake, as I discovered, but actually pretty easy and it turned out to be delicious!
Twenty delicious layers.
We also spent some time outside in our yard. I chose this opportunite to get in some much needed reading.
It was a beautiful day and I loved every second of the book!
Gatsby was in need of attention, so he made it known.
We wrapped up May with another baking event. I was bored and curious about my new icing tips, so I whipped a batch of chocolate mocha cupcakes with vanilla buttercream and homemade chocolate hearts. All made from scratch. My love of baking is something I can’t wait to share with a child. Sometimes when I look after friends’ children I bake with them…although it mostly ends with them eating all the sprinkles, everyone has fun!
Cute and delicious.
Most of the cupcakes went to work with Matthew and Gatsby was disappointed he couldn’t have one. The people that Matthew work with are always thrilled when I get into a baking mood, especially lately. I’ve been trying new recipes and new flavor combinations and new decorations out. So far everything has been pretty good, but I’m due for a catastrophe any day now.
Matthew and I hope that your May was as fun as ours.
lots of love,
Matthew, Laura and Gatsby xo
