One of my favorite memories from growing up were summer BBQ’s. It was so much fun to run around in the grass with cousins and friends, all hopped up on kool-aid, cookies and sunshine. Music played louder than usual and the adults were also a little louder — funnier and slightly less attentitive, too. My favorite part of adulting is recreating that.
We had family and friends from all walks of life — high school, college, post-grad, and work. Mandy’s people and mine. Everyone came together in the name of a taco bar, good music and celebrating a beautiful (and hot!) summer day.
I spent a week working on a 10-hour playlist that blasted throughout the house and the backyard, as we piled chicken, chili-lime shrimp, and grilled veggies into tortillas alongside guac, salsas and street corn with cotija cheese. The mix moved from bossa nova to The Beatles, from Beyonce and Solange to Warren G’s “Hey DJ” and Ghostown DJ’s “My Boo”.
The slip-and-slide was a big hit and it was hilarious to watch the kids run up the hill and splash down. Pretty sure every kid fell asleep in the backseat before turning off our road.
