As the neighborhood heads back to school and the mornings are a little more crisp, I can’t help but reminisce on the summer we had. We had a summer full of happy memories that I hope Oliver remembers. I know I will!
I’m not really a summer day kind of person, I don’t love the hot temperatures and I prefer to be outside during Spring or Fall. But, I really wanted Oliver to have some happy summer memories so I set a goal at the beginning of the summer that we would go outside everyday. And we did! Every morning we would go on a long walk. I’d push Oliver in the stroller and we would go to look at the neighbors goats, chickens, donkeys, and even a llama!
We also got out to the splash pad a handful of times. We love the splash pad, such a great way to cool down on a hot day. Oliver starts out a little timid when we get there but by the end he is racing through the water. We basically have to drag him home. He’d stay all day if we’d let him.
Another activity we loved this summer is going to feed the ducks. There is a park, about a seven minute drive away, which has a beautiful pond full of ducks and even a few ducklings! We always bring a tube of oats to share. The ducks will come right up to you to gobble up the oats. It’s so cute. Our family loves wildlife and feeding the ducks is such a neat way to experience nature and animals.
We also swam! We’re lucky to have some family members with pools. We also swam at the local pool as well. We swam a few times around the Fourth of July! We don’t have a set Independence Day tradition from year to year but every year we spend it with family. We watched the fireworks at the park with my extended family this year. I was nervous about how Oli would react. Last year he hated the fireworks so much, but this year he was totally in awe. I love seeing the world again through his eyes. Plus, no Fourth of July is complete without hot dogs and hamburgers. Yum!
My favorite part of the summer was our camping trip. Growing up my family would spend a week at my favorite place in the world. A special little camping site in the Manti Lasal forest called Ferron Resivoir. Due to our summers working out of state and our summers caring for a baby we hadn’t made it to this camp site as a family until this year. And it sure was a special trip! We went with my parents, siblings, grandparents, and cousins. We spent our days kayaking on the lake, playing Mexican Train Dominoes, stargazing, sitting around the fire, and eating s’mores and other delicious food. Somehow food always tastes better in the mountains. Oliver loved throwing rocks in the lake and playing in the dirt.
This summer we celebrated Oliver turning two! He’s our favorite human on earth. He got some animal toys, a new bike, and some giant blocks for climbing. Oliver is the best kiddo in the world, we love being parents!
Scott works for an amazing company and we were able to go on a work trip to Hawaii this year! It was an unbelievable experience. We spent the mornings at classes learning how to be better people as well as learning leadership principles. We spend the afternoons and evenings exploring the beautiful island of Kona. Our favorite part was finding sea turtles in the ocean. I love wildlife and that was a huge bucket list item for me. They were so cute, we watched them for an hour and a half. It was so special. It was definitely something we will never forget.
A few other highlights from our summer is Oli riding his new bike, going to the zoo, and doing a fun run! Scott doesn’t believe in “fun runs” but I dare say we all had fun after all.
It’s hard to believe the summer is come to a close. We’re looking forward to the upcoming months of fall leaves, corn mazes, and of course, Halloween!
